I know that it's just a excuse, but time really flies by in here. Mine exchange time in HK is almost halfway already, but I really feel that I just arrived in here. Anyway lot's of things happened these few weeks during the lack of updating this blog. Lots of partying, new people and places, hard studying…hahah..at least most of the times. School isn't that hard, but teachers expect quite lots of students, so you need to spend some time to make assignments large scale enough for them. Anyway enough with the school, nobody is interest about that anyway…So here is few 'highlights' during the lasts weeks...

One of my favourite spots in HK to chill out and grab few beers... (also the best place to check out ID's fireworks, if u r early enought to get a spot...god damn..)

In my last blog writing I mentioned that Independence Day of China was just coming. There was a huge firework also that day, so I decided to go check it out. Well, I thought that I was smart and departed early enough to have good places in the harbour front. Fucking hell, how wrong I was once again…As lazy as I am, I decided to took the KCR-train to next by station from the halls and when I came back to the back to the ground level I realized my mistake. I think every third of 7million population of this city had similar plans than me. All the street were closed for the traffic and reserved for pedestrian use only around 1km circle of beach front. There were hundreds of polices to control these huge mass of people. So I couldn't reach closer than 250meter of the shore. My friends were already there somewhere, but of course my phone ran out of credit and I couldn't top it up, coz it was public holiday most of the stores were closed. So what can u do in situation like that…??? Ok, I'll give u the solution…Just go lil' bit further away from the most crowded beach area and head to 7-11 and grab few cheap and cold beers! As the main street was also closed I just walk there with my beers and watched 'fancy' fireworks between the skyscrapers. So children, what did we learnt about this?? When u r in problem just head to 7-11 and chill out..=P

F**king global economy is ruin my view...

During the next week of ID, I really surprised myself and probably also most of u too my dear readers..I took part in fashion show. Yep, you read it right, I really was in fashion show 1st and perhaps last time in my life. Our designer friend invited us (me, David, Nico) to come and check out some of his newest outfits (..and models of course). Show was held in Horse Race Stadium and the purpose was to introduce around 20 young and talented designers and their garments. Coz lack of experience we were reach the venue quite early, so we needed to wait for the while before the show started. And yes, now I know what is the meaning of being 'fashionable late'…Anyway VIP's were late of course so we and when they finally arrived surrounded by cam's and photographers, I thought show is finally ready to start. Well, it started but now it was time to loooong speeches of VIP's and organizers in Cantonese of course. In the end show started and it was ok, thought even with my professional eye I didn't get the meaning of all those garments sometimes. In the break there was girl band from mainland China to entertain us. That group was absolute favourite, especially lyrics touched my heart, u know…=). In the end I had good time and it was nice experience and views from racetrack were great…We ended the night by leaving the place through VIP-facilities, what is totally appropriate for our status of course.

Models, models, models...

Very critical and professional jury + THE designer.

Black design by Mountain Yam.

My personal favorite: girl group from mainland China.

One of the main event of the year for the exchange students is 'International Culture Night'. Nothing big or amazing haven't happened last, coz I've been responsible student and went to school almost everyday. So in total I have 4 different courses (Airline-, Event-, Exhibition management and Putonghua(Mandarin) chinese). Thought it doesn't sound too much of work, you are committed to do surprisingly much reports/group works in these classes. Locals are really hardworking and they really take studying seriously, so I need to sharpen up also. My favourite so far is putonghua, coz classes are pretty funny. My group is formed naturally only by exchange students and Chinese seems to be almost impossible to pronounce in correct way for westerners. I think you need to have good patience if you want to teach Chinese for us, coz at least my tongue just can't do this sounds… Don't worry thought, I had some time to have sun also. Last week Joyce, the girl from my city orienteering group, and her friends organized little bbq-evening. Evening was a success and I had great time. We went to this bbq-area just next to beach and it was 'all that you can eat' type of place. So 1st you pay 70HK$ (~7€) and go pick place where u want to stay. Then the staff bring already fired grill to you. After that you can go to the cold desk and choose what you like in various options (chicken, beef, pork, sausages, fish, octopus etc..). Oh, and don't forget to pick up your free beer/soda which is included in entry fee. The next beers are little bit more expensive than in stores 8HK$ (0,80€), but what a hell still quite cheap, I think. So you ready to some serious barbequeing.

Some serious barbequeing..

Best of all this is that you can go to beach just next to bbq area and they give you a stamp, so you can return later to eat more in same price. Unfortunately this great place is that lil' bit far away, so trip will take around 1½ hours.

Whole BBQ-group.

I took last weekend quite easy and didn't too much, coz yesterday was time for Mid Autumn Festival and today it's been public holiday. So I hooked up with Mountain, Ruby and Bine and we went to HK island to see some light sculptures and traditional song / dance performances. There was around ten of us mainly Finnish people but some international co-operation also by Frenchmen David and Nico and some local influence also offered by Mountain. We (I, Nico, David) were supposed to meet Mountain in subway station next to ferry terminals, but others Finns were taking some 'shortcut' in there and decided to took ferry instead of MTR (subway). Anyway we met Mountain in the station and headed to ferry terminal. Apparently there were lots of other people also going to Macao to loose all their money. So the 1st ferry were we could have tickets on was departing 12.30. We decided to go to queue to take 11.20 ferry, if there would be seats for us anyway. Queuing was worth it and we got in the earlier ferry. In that point I decided to call to the other Finns and ask them if they already arrived to Macao. I found out that their were still in Hong Kong island trying to find ferry terminal, so that's it for their shortcut. Ferry ride took only about a hour and cost 150HK$ one-way. Thought the ferry was waving side-to-side at first it calmed down when quite quickly. That was good new for me, the guy who have grown up in the inland and tend to have sea sickness easily. The smallest possible Black Jack table what I could found was 200HK$, which means that one chip was worth of 20 €. So if u really wanted to play you need to place at minimum 2000HK$ (~200€) to table and probably u can play around 5 minutes with that. Not good… Only game which I recognize beside BJ was roulette and there minimum bet was around 500HK$ or something. In the other tables they played Baccarat, which was totally strange for me. I was watching couple of games, but still I didn't get the rules…but maybe I'm just simple or something. Besides that there was some electronic tables with some weird Chinese symbols and the people could bet 25 000HK$ in them…strange… In the I found myself to play some slots machines and man, I can tell that was maybe the most confusing one I've ever played. Normally you can find 1-5 winning lines to this 'one-handed' slots machines, but in this one there were 44 of those…44 winning lines… Try to sorted out there, when you are winning and when you are losing then. Not too easy task. Anyway I played around 100HK$ (~10€) and then get bored, coz the sirens didn't shout and lights didn't start to flash and there weren't any staff coming to me with this big cheque… GOD DAMN IT… well maybe next time then.

Almost like Vegas, huh...? Well, I don't knoe do I have so much to tell, but I'll try to write something. So last Saturday I took a part to City Orienteerin, organized by my school. We were divided to 9 member teams and name of game was same, what u have might seen in 'Amazing Race'. So 1st we got a map market with the checpoints, which were in different parts of Hong Kong area. In these checpoints we needed to so some task, like eat some chinese food, bargain chopsticks or make a traditional prayer in the temple. Unfortunately, I forgot to charge my camera battery, so after 5 pic's it was dead. Maybe I can find some photos to others and try to attach them later in here.

Team meeting going on...Map readers are Alice (China), Joyce (Hong Kong) and Johannes (Sweden).

Anyway, overall the day was good fun and I learnt more about HK area. The Race started at 9.00 and ended around 18.00. In the evening most of the people were heading out, including me, and whole Sunday went by just recovering from Saturday night fever. This week my lessons also started so I havent done too much. I just been around nearby neighbourhood and went out for few pints couple of the nights...but only few, so it havent been slipped out of control as usual. Today i had dayoff and after the morning laundry session, I decided to do something so I headed to the beach. It is called Shek O and it situated in Hong Kong island. It was really good weather (+30 degrees) and I spent whole afternoon in the beach just chillin'.

Just a regular student Friday...this adaptation back to student life is sooooo hard !!

Thermometer is telling it all... +30*C...

When I was heading back to student halls, I received call from my roommate David. expecting that there is a huge shopping mall in there which you need to go
around to get in the viewing deck. Good way to rip off the every possible penny
from the stupid tourist. When we finally got in the deck, happens what so often
happens with my kind of bad luck. Somehow like from nowhere there was clouds
coming to block the best possible view. What a pity..!!

1st week behind in hectic Hong Kong...

Ok, i've been in here almost a week now, so it's time to give you some updates. At Friday I had to go to school for somekind of welcome seremony. It was the basic stuff, where the management of the PolyU told us, how great this school is and how much opportunities it can to offer to students. All the exchange students were invited there and I found out that there are over 280 of us. After the seminar i head out for the nice dinner with Niina ja Sofia. As we all felt still bit tired coz jetlag, we decided to go sleep quite early and have a calm evening for once. Saturday was 'tourist- day' and our plan to was get know HK lil bit better so we headed to Tsim Sha Tsui area, to take ferry to Hong Kong island. Ferrytrip didn't take too long, only around 10minutes and it offered a good refreshing, coz temperature was over 30*C once again and high humidity didn't help either. I think that my pale finnish skin can't never get use to this climate.

Me & Niina in Tsim Sha Tsui, photo is ruined by some ghetto called Hong Kong behind.

Basic tourist photo from ferry ride.

My intension was to do some shoppings in the island. First we ended up some kind of high class area it was all just Armani, Vendi, Hilfiger, Vutton, Dior, Boss boutiques... As you might guess that is NOT the place where I do my shoppings, so we quickly pass that area and went to normal malls. Thought the fact I found some nice stuff in those, which was quite cheap comparing to Finland, I decided to save my money to real market bargains. After while of pointless wandering in malls we headed to Victoria Park, which is the main park of HK, i guess. In my opinion it wasn't anything magnificent anyway. Day was turning to evening, so it was time to go back home. We took the undeground back to Kowloon and Hung Hom station, which is just next to our dorm. From the station i bought this octopus-card, which is really handy even if you just spend few days in here, coz it allows u to use busses, ferrys, train and undergrounds. If you can't spend all of the money in the card to travelling, you can even pay your purchases in 7-11 with the card. I highly recommend that to all who are visiting HK. After arriving dorm I felt quite tired and was planning to go to bed early. My new roommate David, who just arrived in that morning from Paris, was heading out with few French lads and asked if I want to join them. I thought that we just going somewhere near to have a pint, but after couple of minutes i found myself in bus with 15 other exchange students, heading back to HK island and it's nightlife. That evening turned to early Sunday morning before I found my way back to dorm.

France-Finland co-operation by David and I.

At Sunday our plan was to go Mong Kok shopping/market area. That trip didn't last too long for me. The first time since I arrived, I felt uncomfortable in this big population. We where in this narrow shoppings streets and there were so much people going to all direction and directions and hazzling around, that I didn't felt too comfy with that. So in the end I took train back home after less than hour.. Maybe one of the reason might be the last night, which was included lots of booze... Anyway, rest of the Sunday i spent just to healing my hangover and recovering last night.

At monday it was time to get back to student life. Yeah, you read it right, I'm here to study. Unfortunately, I need to take some courses to keep my student money running. At least it was just for one hour tutorial about Event tourism and Management, so it wasn't too bad. Same night we had this welcome party for all exchange students in our student halls (=dorm) banquet hall. After the official part of it most of the people head out for partying. It was really funny to see all the local faces, after around 200 exchange students invasion of local 7-11 beer fridge. I think that x-mas came early for that shop as we bought every single cold beers, what they had. The clubbing in here is not too cheap, so it's good have some drinks before going in the clubs. Beer cost around 4-5 € in the clubs, so it's quite good idea to buy can of beer in shop, costs 0,25-0,50€, at least when you here with student budget. The main stage of the night was club called Bubbles, where we had karaoke lounge. But don't worry, I decided to save the others and not to sing. In some point of the evening I found myself sitting in the club area with locals, while they try to teach me some local drinking game. In the end I think I got the rules and been a bit wiser than Saturday, I finished my evening when I was still winning and headed back to dorm before closing time.

Me, Nicolas, Niina, David and some Irish girl???, in the Bubbles...

Karaoke fever...!!

That's it for this time, more info coming later... so, hold ur corpses...

Finally in Hong Kong...

Ok, coz all the crowd request, I'll start my english version for my travel blog in Hong Kong now. Basicly it's just lil bit shortened version for my finnish blog. So if you really want to enjoy all and get all the details what is happening, you really should start to learn some finnish..Anyway to the point, this is what has happened do far:

I had my flights booked from Helsinki to Hong Kong, via Amsterdam, last Tue 28th of Aug. Before departure, I spent calm and relaxing weekend in my parents place, before I headed to Jyväskylä at Sunday. Well, as so often happens I needed to go and have last pint with punch of my friends. In the end last pint wasn't just a pint, it was more like whole barrel. So with terrible hangover I was spending whole Monday to pack my stuff. As I needed to take 2.00 a.m night bus to Helsinki airport, I decided not to sleep at all. I met my fellowstudents Sofia and Niina in the airport and we took 1st flight to Amsterdam around 8.00. The flight went well and I could even eat breakfast in the plane, after the rought Sunday. We had couple of hours to spent before our final flight to HK, which I spent in comfy couch of Schiphol apt.

Enjoying the Amsterdam airport facilities...

Now it was time for real travelling, flight time to Hk was 11,5 hours. Journey went suprisingly well. I just watched movies and enjoyed catering (btw. Shrek 3,was huge disappointment). We arrived to HK Wed 29th Aug around 8.00 a.m in local time and it was time to go and find accomadation. When I walked outside of the air-contitioned terminal the reality really strike me. It was +29*C in already in early morning and what really makes it choking, is the humidity which is really high. So after 2 minutes you are totally sweaty and u feel that there is rabbit size sweat ball constantly living in your groins. So, we had good instructions to how to find the accomodation, so no problems for that. Im bedding in Hong Kong Polytechnic University Halls (=dorm). After filling couple of papers, I got the room in the 17th floor. The room is maybe 15m2 and i shared with the other student.

The view from my room towards to Hong Kong island.

After I get rid of my luggage it was time to go and buy some basic stuff, like beddings linens, adapter etc.. We went to Hung Hom area to buy these stuff, coz of all this tiredness (i haven't slept properly since Sunday night) it was hilarious experience, so we were giggleling to almost everything. After the shoppings it was time to go bed. Next day we went to campus to register ourselves to school and pick up our student card. You need show that to this readermachines almost everywhere you go and I find it really stupid. At least you can go to toilet without showing it. Anyway after registration it was time to explore the campus area and go to grab something to eat. We ordered some take-aways and as I was eating I noticed how beginning my 'mission chopsticks' still is. After dinner day was over and I didn't do too much, before going to sleep.

So, that was the first chapter, more stuff is coming soon...And don't forget to comment (kommentoi), so i know if this just waste of time or if someone is actually reading it..

..Stay tuned...
